The Holiday Season is upon us and with that comes the parties! We have some tips to help you keep your skin glowing while still being able to indulge and have some fun. Here are the two-major skin harming culprits and some strategies to help minimize their damage:
So, let’s talk about alcohol. Not many of us can get through the Holidays without partaking in some alcoholic beverages. Alcohol is not your skin’s friend. Too much leaves your skin dehydrated, dull, and lackluster. One side of effect of alcohol is that it disrupts your sleep. The expression “get your beauty rest” has merit. When we sleep our cells regenerate. When our sleep cycle is disrupted due to alcohol our skin doesn’t get the chance to rejuvenate itself. One of the major side effects of too little sleep is tired, puffy eyes. In addition to all this alcohol helps exacerbate skin conditions such as acne and rosacea. In short, alcohol will leave your skin dull and dehydrated, with dark bags under your eyes, and possible acne flare ups. Not exactly the glowing skin we want for the Holidays.
Sugar is the second major skin damaging enemy and it’s everywhere during the Holiday season. What happens to your skin when you ingest too much sugar? Sugar (found in the form of simple carbs or high-glycemic foods) is rapidly converted into glucose. A rush of glucose is quickly converted into insulin. An insulin spike leads to a rush of inflammation in the body. The inflammation then in turn produces enzymes that degrade the Collagen and Elastin in your skin, which leads to sagging skin and wrinkles. As if that’s not enough, digested sugar permanently attaches to Collagen and Elastin through a process as known as glycation. Glycation causes Collagen and Elastin to harden and become more fragile and prone to damage. Basically, the opposite of what you want, which is supple, plump, youthful looking skin.
Thankfully we have some tips for you to minimize the damage caused by alcohol and sugar!
- When it comes to alcoholic beverages you’re going to want to avoid anything high in sugar. Choose wine over beer. Beer is high in simple carbohydrates. When it comes to wine champagne or sparkling wine has the lowest amount of sugar, with dry white wine being the second best. If you are a red drinker make sure you choose a dry red. Hard alcohol itself is low in sugar, but it’s what you mix it with that counts. When choosing a mix avoid soft drinks and fruit juices. Or at least cut them in half with the addition of soda water. Instead of the classic gin & tonic, try gin mixed with soda water, cucumber and a splash of lemon. Or try vodka with soda and a splash of cranberry juice. You’ll be seriously reducing the amount of sugar you’ll intake. Don’t forget that for every alcoholic beverage drink one glass of water.
- What foods should you avoid at a Holiday Party? Try to stay away from any white carbs which can be found in the form of white bread, cake, or cookies. Fried food is a no no and stay away from the candy. Condiments such as ketchup and BBQ sauce are loaded with sugar so choose mustard instead. Again, avoid the soft drinks and fruit juices.
What should you eat at a Holiday Party? There are some smart choices to be made. Nuts are high in Omegas, a good source of fat, which will deliver so much needed love to your skin. Veggies, veggies, and more veggies! Go for lean sources of protein such as salmon, shrimp, and chicken. Berries will deliver a strong antioxidant and vitamin boost to your skin as well.
- Before bed drink a full glass of water. No matter what wash your face! Your skin will thank you in the morning.
- What about the morning after? Instead of reaching for that cup of coffee, which will just further dehydrate your skin, consider green tea as an alternative. Green tea is a skin superstar that’s been proven to significantly interfere with the glycation process while stimulating Collagen production at the same time! It’s a win-win. Eat a breakfast that has a combination of lean protein, healthy fats, and some complex carbs. We suggest some poached eggs and avocado toast.
